Augustin Bergeron

Assistant Professor of Economics

Augustin Bergeron is an Assistant Professor of Economics at Harvard University. His research operates at the intersection of development economics, public economics, and political economy, with a primary focus on the determinants of state and tax capacity. He also explores how the historical origins of social structures and beliefs continue to shape economic development in the modern era.

Much of his work involves extensive fieldwork in the D.R. Congo, where he helps manage ODEKA (Organisation d'Etudes Economiques sur le Kasai), a non-profit survey organization.

Augustin earned his Ph.D. in Political Economy and Government from Harvard in 2021, receiving the Outstanding Dissertation Award from the National Tax Association. Before returning to Harvard as faculty, he served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Stanford King Center on Global Development. He is a Faculty Research Fellow at the NBER and holds affiliations with BREAD, J-PAL, CEPR, IGC, CEGA, Harvard CID, and the Weatherhead Center.
