Harvard Undergraduate Economics in the News: The NBA, Home Stadium Attendance, and Team Performance

June 30, 2017
Nicholas Heath, a rising senior economics concentrator at the College, had a recent moment of fame with one of his economics course papers.

For his Econ 970 Sophomore Tutorial (taught by Cheng Gao, HBS), Nick studied the fan loyalty of National Basketball Association teams by comparing how attendance in a team's home stadium varies with team performance.  His findings peg the Dallas Mavericks, New Orleans Pelicans, and New York Knicks as having the most loyal fan bases, while the Houston Rockets, Denver Nuggets, and Los Angeles Clippers have the most fair-weather fans.  This summer, Nick turned his paper into a blog post for the Harvard Sports Analysis Collective, which received a lot of attention and was featured on the Dallas Mavericks' website.  Nice work, Nick!
