Emily Breza joined the Economics Department as an Assistant Professor in January 2017. She received her PhD in Economics from MIT and her BA from Yale University. After graduate school, she joined the faculty of Columbia Business School in the Finance and Economics Division. Her research focuses on development economics, social networks, and household finance. She is particularly interested the social and behavioral aspects of how individuals interact with credit and labor markets.
Melissa Dell is a former Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and a Global Scholar in the Institutions, Organizations and Growth program at the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Melissa's research focuses on the interplay between the state, non-state actors, and economic development. Nathan Nunn is the Frederic E. Abbe Professor of Economics at Harvard University. Professor Nunn was born in Canada, where he received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 2005. Professor Nunn’s primary research interests are in economic history, economic development, cultural economics, political economy and international trade. Gautam Rao received his Ph.D. in Economics from UC Berkeley in 2014, and is presently a post-doctoral research fellow at Microsoft Research Labs, New England. He joined the Department of Economics at Harvard as an Assistant Professor in July 2015 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019. Gautam's research brings insights from psychology to bear on topics in economics, particularly topics relevant to developing countries. Recent projects include studying how mixing rich and poor students in schools in India affects social preferences and behaviors, how citizens are motivated to vote by social image concerns, and how innovative financial contracts can help patients with hypertension overcome their self-control problems in rural India. In addition to working in behavioral and development economics, he has secondary interests in political and labor economics.
David Yang is an Assistant Professor of Economics. His research focuses on political economy, behavioral and experimental economics, economic history, and cultural economics. In particular, David studies the forces of stability and forces of changes in authoritarian regimes, drawing lessons from historical and contemporary China.
