2018 Fall Reunion Weekend
Economics Dept. Reception & Discussion
Sat, October 13
Littauer Hansen-Mason Room
Faculty discussion with Professor Jeffrey Miron.
The Department of Economics invites all undergraduate and graduate alumni to a reception with members of the Department and fellow alumni, as well as a discussion with Professor Jeffrey Miron, Director of Graduate and Undergraduate Studies in Economics.Professor Miron’s talk will focus on the rise in opioid deaths in the United States over the past two decades. The standard explanation blames pharmaceutical companies for aggressively advertising opioids, and doctors for excessively prescribing them, beginning in the early 1990s. Professor Miron instead suggests that the opioid crisis has resulted from too many restrictions on opioids rather than too few, which push opioid users toward diverted or illicit opioids. This causes more overdoses and deaths because consumers in underground markets cannot easily determine potency or quality. The implication of this “More Restrictions, More Deaths” narrative is that the United States should scale back restrictions on opioid prescribing.
